Assignment No.2
Situating your problem in relation to problems of others
- start preparing a design problem by looking at the problems that other designers have worked with that fit under the general topic you are interested in. This will help give you a context for a design problem.
- By way of an example: Willems’ study of prescription drugs used in the treatment of asthma arrived at conclusion that the prescription drugs as “therapeutic agents” created different kinds of “bodies,” “lungs,” and “worlds” for patients with asthma to live in. It is noteworthy that Willems did not provide an assessment of the efficacy of the prescription drugs he studied. He did not make recommendations for improvements in the prescription drugs themselves. What he did was produce original findings that recommended considerations of social determinants of health to be applied in the development of treatment trajectories of patients taking prescription drugs to treat asthma.
- start this process by finding 3 different examples of design problems that show differences in approach to studying the general topic you are interested in working with.
Diabetes
-
- Lack of understanding about the disease may delay finding potential diabetes and early diagnosis
- Complicated diabetes management for Children who have type 1 diabetes
- Potential Overtreatment in Older Adults with Diabetes
- Food and exercise guide for diabetes (strict diet and omitting certain foods group)
Situating Your Problem in relation to the Solutions worked on by Others
- finding a minimum of 3 different design problems that show differences in approach to studying the general topic you are interested in working with, I want you to outline the design solutions that each problem produced.
- By way of an example: Willems’ study drew upon a research design that included the illness experiences of Steven, Carl, and Denise to reveal that their treatment trajectories all became very different as a result of how they used prescription drugs used in the treatment of asthma.
Diabetes
- Lowering blood glucose level: Free style flash gluco monitoring system allows continuous blood monitoring syste.
- Choice of healthy, less calorie, less fat foods
- Apple watch with exercise tracking tool
Research QuestionsResearch questions are different from research problems.
- Research questions give you, the designer, a direction for orienting your problem definition and problem solution work.
Initial topic ideas
1. Early diagnosis of diabetes
- How might we promoting / recognize early diagnosis of diatetes?
- Diabetes is a common chronic disease among adults. There are many incorrect information out there and it may cause confusion for early diabetes or those in high risk group of people. What is the best methods for early diagnois of diabetes?
Existing study (literature)
- Continuous glucose monitoring system and new era of early diagnosis of diabetes in high risk groups
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4056122/
2. Insulin management by diabetets for children and older adults
- Insulin inject for Type 1 diabetic children can be challenging. And insulin injection for older adults also maybe challenging.
3. How to keep the glucose level in stable rate and what are the methods?

What is this blue circle?
